Bayern Munich and Senegal forward Sadio Mane has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar due to a leg injury he sustained.

Mane picked up an injury to his right fibula in Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen last week.

He was named in Senegal’s 26-man squad for the World Cup. But the 30-year-old will not feature in Qatar after being unable to recover from the injury.

On Tuesday, Senegal’s football federation said the reigning Africa footballer of the year would miss their “first games” of the tournament. But it seems head coach Aliou Cisse will now have to plan without the star man.

Another MRI scan was made on Thursday that showed surgical intervention is needed. This forced the player to remain in Germany and not join his Senegal teammates in Qatar.

Senegal will start their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on Monday.

They are in Group A and will also play against hosts Qatar on 25 November and Ecuador on 29 November.
