Senegalese international striker Serigne Mamour Niang has completed a move to DStv Premiership side SuperSport United. The club announced in a statement on Thursday that Mamour Niang joins on a one-and-a-half-year deal with an option to renew.

Niang is a younger brother to former SuperSport striker Mame Niang. Niang senior who also played in South Africa for clubs such as Mamelodi Sundowns, Swallows, Stellenbosch and University of Pretoria, was reportedly instrumental in the striker joining United.

SERIGNE MAMOUR NIANG IMPRESSES GAVIN HUNT

Mamour Niang (24) went through a period of trials at Matsatsantsa in December and impressed the Gavin Hunt led technical team.

“We wanted to bring in a younger striker to complement the experience we have upfront,” SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt said on Niang.

“Niang is a typical number nine and he will be able to take off some of the workload in our strike force. His aerial power is going to cause teams problems and I’m looking forward to pushing him to higher levels.”

SUPERSPORT TO PART WITH THAMSANQA GABUZA

Niang played for Senegalese outfit Teungueth FC. He helped them to win the league in the 2020/21 season before securing a move to Matsatsantsa. The lanky forward is viewed as a replacement for wantaway striker Thamsanqa Gabuza.

Gabuza is set to complete a move to Stellenbosch before the end of the January transfer window period.

Meanwhile, Niang says he can’t wait to show the Matsatsantsa faithful what he can offer.

“I am very excited to join SuperSport United,” he told the club’s media department.

“Mame Niang told me that coach Gavin Hunt is like a father to all of his players and he’s pushed me to work hard during all of our training sessions. I’m looking forward to meeting all the Matsatsantsa supporters.”

It’s unclear if the player will be available for the league clash against Swallows. They travel to the Dobsonville Stadium for a clash against the struggling Swallows side on Saturday, 28 January at 17:30.

United are currently third on the log. They are one of the few teams with a realistic chance of catching runway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns. They are on 28 points, 21 points behind Sundowns, but with two games in hand.
