Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Mpheni Home Defenders have advanced to the last 16 round of the 2023 Nedbank Cup.
This follows a 3-0 win over fellow minnows Clarewood JPM at a packed Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.
Mpheni’s goals were scored by Bonginkosi Makanya, Nkateko Shilenge and Nkosephayo Mavundla.
MPHENI HOME DEFENDERS EXECUTE STRATEGY
“It was a very rough team. They are tall and that’s what I told my players that you need to play down and make sure that you play on the carpet,” said Mpheni coach Sydwell Phuravhathu.
“I told them that they must make sure not to commit unnecessary fouls or corner at the back. We knew that they would hurt us with the setpieces, that’s why we didn’t concede.
“The score reflects how we trained during the week because we knew that once we take a lead they will come out trying to get an equalizer and they will open up at the back and we will hit them with a counter. That’s why we invited them to come to us so that we could hit them with a counter.
ON WHO THEY PREFER IN THE NEDBANK CUP LAST 16
“We are just playing to enjoy ourselves, we don’t care whoever we play. We don’t have pressure, our main aim is to gain promotion so Nedbank Cup we are just playing for fun.”
Teams that have advanced through to the next round so far are; Mamelodi Sundowns, Marumo Gallants, Dondol Stars, Sekhukhune United, Cape Town Spurs, Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch, Golden Arrows, Venda Football Academy, Mpheni Home defenders and Orlando Pirates.
