World-renowned football club Vakhegula Vakhegula will play host to the first ever Grannies International Football Tournament.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Nkowa-Nkowa, Tzaneen in Limpopo from 26-29  March 2023. It will comprise 20 teams, 13 from across the globe and seven from different provinces in South Africa.


The Grannies Football was originally started in Nkowa-Nkowa by well-known former broadcaster Beka Ntsanwisi. Ntsanwisi formed a team consisting of Vakhegula meaning ‘Grannies’ from ages of 50 to 80.

The team has grown to be famous all over the world and have been invited to football World Cups. They have also had their own tours vow invites from other nations, this includes the famous visit to France where they won 10-0 against their counterparts.

Through her foundation, Ntsanwisi will now realize her dream of hosting an  international football tournament.


Countries such as the USA, Denmark, France, Zambia, Germany and Togo will make their way to South Africa.

“The stadium will be accessible for free so if anyone wants to come they will be welcome. It will also be during the school holidays so everyone is welcome since the matches will be played during the day,” said Nkhensani Ntsanwisi from the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation.

How the tournament will be played:

There will be round-robin games with the 20 teams divided into five groups of four on the first day of the tournament.

Matches will last for 40 minutes with 20 minutes in either half. The winning five teams on points from each of the five groups, along with three of the best runner-up teams will move into the quarterfinals.

The Winners will walk away with R50 000 while the runner-up will receive R20 000.
