Mamelodi Sundowns have appointed well known football analyst Michael Loftman as Set Play Coach. 

The decision to bolstered their technical team with the former Orlando Pirates mentor was revealed in a statement  on Tuesday.


“The appointment is made in an effort to raise the bar including a specialist to the Technical Team,” the statement. 

“All elite sport is about gaining small margins. Replays and restarts are a significant part of modern-day football and are even more crucial when playing in the CAF Champions League.”

Loftman also holds a UEFA A license from the English FA and a Sports Science & Coaching Masters Degree from Brunel University. 

He was recently head coach at Motsepe Foundation Championship side Venda Football Academy. But poor results led to his dismissal. Loftman worked as coach of the DStv Diski Challenge team at Pirates. 


In his role, Loftman will work on the pitch and compile analytic data to provide information to improve an important part of the game.

“We are very happy to have Michael and add his competencies to the experienced and highly qualified technical team,” said The Sporting Director at the club Flemming Berg. 

Masandawana will will travel to Cameroon for their second ground B Match against Coton Sport Garoua. Loftman will be part of the traveling team. 

He will join the technical team which consists of the likes of Manqoba Mngqithi, Steve Komphela and Wendell Robinson.
