Chippa United advanced to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup at the expense of Polokwane City after winning on penalties at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.

Rise and Shine got off to a good start as they took an early lead through Francis Baloyi in the third minute. After a miscalculated back pass from chippa midfielder Meshack Maphangule who wanted to play the ball with his goal minder Stanley Nwabali.

However, the Chilli boys leveled the matters in the 12th minute of the game after a superb run from Thabiso Lebitso on the right flank who put in a low cross which deflected Polokwane City defender Bulelani Nikani and found the back of the net.

It was the last clash between the two PSL teams to fight for the remaining last 16 spot.

CHIPPA UNITED EXPERIENCE SHOWED AFTER THEIR WIN AGAINST POLOKWANE CITY

Polokwane City continued threatening Chippa and should have taken the lead at the half hour mark. A great cross from Khomotjo Lekoloane on the right flank and Mokibelo Ramabu failed to hit the target as his shot sailed over the crossbar.

Rise and Shine’s Manuel Sapunga pulled off a great save in the 40th minute of the first half to deny Etiosa Ighodaro header to ensure both teams went to break one apiece. Polokwane City picked up where they left in the second half with Marema and Ramabu continued to threaten Chippa United and they nearly broke a deadlock in the 83rd minute of the game.

They ended with 1-all after 90 minutes. It was Polokwane City who looked like they needed a win more than their opponent. The match went to the penalties and again Polokwane City inexperience proved to be their stumping block as they failed to go through  to the last 16.
