South Africa’s most successful club Mamelodi Sundowns will be one of the inaugural eight clubs in the new Africa Super League to get underway in August. According to a report by MTN FC publication.

This comes as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had to scale back on its original plans for the much talked about competition.

The publication has revealed that the defending DStv Premiership champions will be part of the inaugural edition.

AFRICA SUPER LEAGUE TEAMS FINALISED?

Other reportedly confirmed clubs are Petro Atletico (Angola), TP Mazembe (Democratic Republic of Congo), Al Ahly (Egypt), Horoya (Guinea), Wydad Casablanca (Morocco), Simba (Tanzania) and Esperance of Tunisia.

The tournament was launched last year in August with the promise of ushering a new era of prosperity for football on the continent. But there were little details over its structure and funding have yet to be confirmed more than six months later.

The initial plan was that 24 clubs from 16 countries would be part of the inaugural edition. CAF president Patrice Motsepe revealed that there would be $100-million in prize-money with $11.6-million for the winner.

Each of the 54 member associations of CAF receive $1-million per year towards football development as a solidarity fund. According to the same publication, the structure of the new league is still unclear.

But is likely to be a single super group, with each club playing each other home and away. This could be over the season for a total of 14 matches. The winner is likely to get one of the four berths for Africa at the expanded Club World Cup. The new format will be introduced in two years’ time.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS PSL FUTURE COMPROMISED?

The other issue raised was the future of the CAF Champions League and Sundowns participation in the DStv Premiership.
