CAF Women’s Africa Cup of nations Champions Banyana Banyana received a heroes welcome on Thursday, following the Turkish Women’s Cup triumph.

Banyana won Group A on goal difference after beating Uzbekistan 3-0 on Saturday and drawing 1-1 with Slovenia on Tuesday afternoon. They received their trophy and medals for their efforts.

Banyana and runners-up Slovenia finished with four points. Zambia claimed three points while Uzbekistan had nothing to show for their trouble. Meanwhile, Kosovo were the winners of Group B.

Limpopo born striker Hildah Magaia was named as the midfielder of the tournament.

SAFA president Dr Danny Jordaan, CEO Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe, COO Lydia Monyepao, CFO Gronie Hluyo, NEC members Job Mchunu and Jack Maluleka were there to welcome the squad.

“We are very happy. This is the second tournament they went to and this is the second title Banyana brings home. So, we are delighted,” said Dr Jordaan.

“What we want to do is to give the team an opportunity to play against European opposition. In the World Cup, there are two European teams in our group – Sweden and Italy.

“I think Slovenia is quite close to the quality of Italy, who gave the team a good test in Turkey. They now have some idea of what they will face in the World Cup,” he said.

Evima Football, the organisers of the tournament held in Antaly, Turkey, confirmed that Banyana won their group on goal difference.

“It was very important to have a team like yours here because you are FIFA Women’s World Cup participants. This is very important and we hope at the same time this was a very good experience for you,” said Evima Football official Evgeni Marinov to SAFA.
