Former Baroka FC coach Wedson Nyirenda has accepted a short-term deal offer from Zambian Super League club Zanaco FC as the ex-PSL mentor to become their interim head coach.

The Telkom Cup winning coach with Bakgakga in 2028, has joined Zanaco after the sacking of coach Kelvin Kaindu. Lately consultant coach Emmanuel Amunike and the assistant Emeka Amadi on Monday, 10 April 2023.

The Lusaka-based club are 13th on the log with 34 points, six points clear of 17th Chambishi in a league that consists of 18 teams. Nyirenda’s new home could still be relegated, as the three teams who finish in the final three positions of the table will be relegated to the National Division One league.

The former Zambian national team mentor agreed to return to take over the Zanaco’s reins until the end of the season—with a mandate of keeping the team’s top league status.

“I am back at Zanaco just for two months, that’s up until the end of this season,” Nyirenda told LimSportsZone.

“They have brought me here to help them to fight relegation, and I’m confident we will work hard to save the team. Then after that, I will have to make a decision (for the future).”

WHAT MANAGEMENT SAY REGARDING FORMER PSL COACH’S APPOINTMENT

Nyirenda is familiar with the team, having coached the Lusaka side a decade ago.

The club’s management have total trust in the coach to take the team away from the threatening position and eventually deliver trophies.

“Mr. Wedson Nyirenda is a seasoned coach who has coached the Zambia senior men’s national team, top-tier clubs and in South Africa and Mozambique and several local Premier League clubs in Zambia, including Zanaco from 2009 to 2011,” the club’s statement reads.

“He has won a number of trophies and league titles during his coaching career spanning over 25 years. The board of directors and management of Zanaco FC are confident that Mr. Nyirenda will add value to the club and inspire the team to greater success.”
