While many South African football fanatics described him as the most underrated player, the former SuperSport United midfielder Jabulani Maluleke has admitted that he was indeed overlooked during his playing times.

Maluleke has been around a lot of talent in his time as a footballer, he has seen all kinds of players flourish. And while many of the talents he played alongside got their flowers, Maluleke could not be part of them.

The 41-year-old ex-footballer has played for Black Leopards, Polokwane City, and Sekhukhune United, just to name a few. Before he decided to hang up his boots at Venda Football Academy in July 2022. He has won the 2009/10 Absa Premiership and Nedbank Cup with Matsatsantsa.


Mavotja, as Maluleke is affectionately known, thinks he is one of those all-time greats who are often overlooked for their contribution to the league despite their great talents.

In an exclusive interview with PrimeSportsWithMahlatse, the free-kick taker specialist said he thinks he was undervalued according to what he had displayed on the field of play.

“I was underrated, that’s a sad part I had to deal with (in my football career),” Maluleke told PrimeSportsWithMahlatse.

“I was underrated because I had to prove my talent to people. Show it on the field of play (that I can play, and I have a talent).

“But I did my part, I gave my all, I have showcased my talent and enjoyed my football career. But it is South African football, we have to live with it, it is what it is.

Maluleke is now enjoying his coaching job at SuperSport United as a set-piece coach for the senior team. He is also coaching under-19 side
