Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokwena or anyone from Mamelodi Sundowns deserves to be crowned as the Premier Soccer League’s Player of the Year ahead of someone, says coach Rulani Mokwena.

Sundowns’ goalkeeper Williams has been outstanding for the DStv Premiership champions this season, having kept 20 clean sheets for Mokwena’s side, while assisting them to win the league title.

On the other hand, Teboho Mokwena has also been a very useful player in the middle of the park, despite not scoring as many goals as others in the league.

Meanwhile, prospect Cassius Mailula has also shown his importance in Mokwena’s Sundowns. The 21-year-old has scored nine goals and assisted three times in his first professional season at the Brazilians in the domestic competitions.

The Tshwane giants have clinched the league title with seven games before the season ends. The team is now likely to qualify for the CAF Champions League semifinals.

Mokwena is amongst those who believe Sundowns players, not anyone else, should be crowned player of the year. The Brazilians coach pointed to his players’ consistency throughout the season.

“I said it on match day 19, match day 20, I said what are we waiting for—when are we going to have this discussion because it’s clear, its Sundowns players in the top three, when are we having this discussion,” asked Mokwena after their 1-0 win over Richards Bay on Tuesday at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

“We are waiting for a surprise to come? No, Tebza (Teboho Mokoena), and Ronwen (Williams) we should discuss them. And maybe open the door for Cassius (Mailula) and possibly other names like Mshishi (Themba Zwane).

“But the Sundowns players have been so incredible and to do what they have done consistently. Not in five games or sometimes, but consistently, it takes a lot of effort.

“Fortunately, I’m not part of the judging panel. But I can tell you—perhaps the judges can also tell you if they are honest. That probably this is the easiest decision on footballer of the season they had in many, many years.”

However, Orlando Pirates’ Monnapule Saleng is making a strong case of his own with 14 goals—two less than first-placed Peter Shalulile in all domestic competitions this season.

Saleng has been in blistering form since he returned to the Buccaneers from Swallows in the 2022/2023 DStv Premiership campaign. He has also registered six assists in his remarkable statistics.
