Mpheni Home Defenders were crowned overall champions of the SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League and subsequently qualify for the national playoffs. Home Defenders beat The Dolphins by a goal to nil at a packed Oscar Mpetha Stadium at the University of Limpopo this past weekend. They join the winners of the other eight provinces for the national playoffs to be held in Durban from 5-11 June 2023.

The other winners are Amavarara (Eastern Cape), Mlambo Royal Cubs (Mpumalanga), Dondol Stars (Gauteng), Upington City (Northern Cape). Young Bafana (Western Cape) and Orbit College (North West).

Club owner and coach Sydwell Phuravhathu is confident that they will seal a promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship in Durban.

“This is our time to go to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. We are going to go there to the national first division,” he told the media.

“We do have quality because if you look at it our last game was on 1 April and we only played a few games after that. So, players are not that sharp. But we will keep on working on that and make sure we are ready for the playoffs,” he said.

Before the match could start, there was a protest from The Dolphins who insisted Mpheni were not the rightful opponents. The Dolphins accused Mpheni of cheating their way to the provincial playoffs and wanted to face Giyani Happy Boys instead. Happy Boys were Mpheni’s closest rivals and finished the season in the second position in Stream A.
