CAF Confederation Cup semifinalists Marumo Gallants are hit with a bonus crisis as their players boycott a training session on Tuesday. Gallants are scheduled to play against Yanga SC in a Confederation Cup semifinal on Wednesday night at Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace.

A win for the Limpopo club will secure them a historic berth to the Final and a guaranteed R 11.5 million. But the club was faced with a crisis hours before the match.

The players have allegedly also refused to get into the bus for their training session. It was scheduled for 13:00 at the match venue. They allegedly demanded that the club sign a written agreement that will guarantee them bonuses for reaching this stage of the competition.

As it stands, the club is already guaranteed R 8.25 million. But in a statement issued on Tuesday, the club insists bonuses are only issued at the discretion of club management.

“There are no outstanding bonuses owed/due to any Marumo Gallants players,” the club said.

“There are no outstanding salary payments owed/due to any Marumo Gallants players. Performance bonuses and other payouts are done at the discretion of club management based on several factors.

“The previous issuing of various bonuses does not guarantee the delivery or timing of future bonuses,” read the sattement.

“Cup qualifying bonuses and other payments issued to the club form part of the financial management of the club. Demands by players for specific bonus amounts to be paid at specific points in time are unfounded and damaging to the club, particularly ahead of important matches.”

“The focus of the club is on the upcoming matches. Including the CAF Confederation Cup 2nd leg semi-final tomorrow. We hope that the team will continue with the great performance shown throughout the competition.”
