Banyana Banyana defender Noko Matlou who hails from Moletjie in Limpopo has had her contract renewed for another season by Spanish Women’s Primera Division side SD Eibar.

Matlou has been part of the club since 2020 after joining from the Polokwane-based club Ma-indies. The 37-year-old played all, but two matches, the entire season.

“To see Eibar players and managers so excited after extending my contract just melted my heart,” said Matlou.

“I don’t know what to say, but I’m looking forward to the 2023/2024 season.”

The club also confirmed that Matlou and three other players have been rewarded with new contracts.

“Eibar have renewed the contracts of women’s team players Noelia Garcia, Jujaba Cardozo, Noko Matiou and Kenni Thompson to keep them in place until June 2024.

“The four players, who were part of the effort to secure promotion to the Primera Division, were set to run out of contract on June 30 of this year. But they have now extended their deals for another year,” the club said.

“Goalkeeper Noelia, defenders Noko and Jujuba and midfielder Kenni have been important parts of Yerai Martín’s team,” concluded a statement from the side.”

Matlou is a veteran Banyana Banyana player who made her debut in 2006. She has since gone on to represent her country and four Wafcon tournaments and a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Matlou was also selected to be part of the 2012 Olympics in London. Matlou is expected to form part of the Banyana Banyana squad that will grace the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The tournament is set to be held in New Zealand and Australia. It is the second appearance for the South African ladies.
