Upington City from the Northern Cape has been crowned overall Champions of the 2022/23 SAFA ABC Motsepe League playoffs champions. They beat Orbit College from North West and subsequently gave some hope to the soccer loving fanatics in the Northern Cape Province.

The Province has in the past two years produced two professional soccer teams participating in the Motsepe Foundation League which is the second-largest soccer league in the country.

The number one citizen in the province Dr Zamani Saul is a well known football lover, this victory will eventually sit well with him.


The newly crowned champions side showed character when they squared up in the promotional battles finals against Orbit, they now join Postmansburg-based outfit Hungry Lions who also did well in the debut season.

For their hard earned victory, they banked a whopping R1. 2 Million Rands, for winning the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs. City marksman Willie was also rewarded with R100 000 for being the top goal scorer of the tournament.

City’s well orchestrated journey took some shape when they defeated Mpheni Home Defenders 3-2 in the match which was decided by penalties.

Perhaps this could be the evolution of the football game in the Northern Cape. Eventually, the province will have football in the elite league. If it happens it will be new to the locals.

The province has produced stars like Jimmy Tau who plied his trade at Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. He went to captain both sides. Daniel Tlhageng who played for Golden Arrows, the Henyekane brothers who also played for Arrows. Thato Mokeke who currently plays for Cape Town City and Suprise Ralani.
