Cape Town Spurs have been promoted to the DStv Premiership while Maritzburg United have been relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. This follows a 0-0 result in the PSL Promotion playoffs match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Spurs topped the Promotion mini-league table with 10 points. Thanks to three solitary-goal victories before defying a second-half onslaught from a Maritzburg team backed by a capacity 12 000 crowds.

Maritzburg needed a win to retain their Premiership status. But they could not unlock a Spurs side that defended in depth as tiredness set in.

“Our warrior spirit saw us through,” said tearful Spurs coach Shaun Bartlett.

“The legs of our older players were close to collapsing. But they were determined to see us into the top flight and dug deep,” he said.

A DStv Premiership club get an R5.5 million pre-season allowance and a monthly R2.5 million grant. The first prizes totaling R30 million. A Motsepe Foundation Championship club receives R1.5 million each before the season kicks off. R750,000 a month and the league winners pocket R5 million.
