Ellis called up most of the players who won South Africa’s Women’s National Team its first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nation (WAFCON) title. Banyana became the new queen of the continent after beating the host, Morocco 2-1 in the final of the 2022 WAFCON.

Two noticeable absentees in the squad were forward Nthabiseng Majiya and the veteran defender Janine Van Wyk who were both in the Wafcon winning team last year.

Banyana star Thembi Kgatlana, who didn’t play in the final of Africa’s elite tournament because of a serious injury, returns to the team.

South Africa were drawn in Group G at the World Cup with Argentina, Italy, and Sweden. They will open their campaign on 23 July against Sweden, before facing Argentina on July 28. The last match of the group stage will see them play Italy on August 2.
