Stellenbosch has announced the signing of winger Kgaogelo Sekgota after his exit from Kaizer Chiefs, the club confirmed on Saturday morning.

The Bafana Bafana international midfielder joined Steve Barker’s troops on an undisclosed long-term deal. This is after the termination of his contract by Chiefs, where he still had a year on his initial contract.

The 26-year-old has been linked with the Winelands side for some time, as well as his former club, Moroka Swallows after what seemed as an unsuccessful stint at Amakhosi.

STELLENBOSCH SIGN KGAOGELO SEKGOTA

After having lost some key of their players, including the Argentinian star, Júnior Mendieta, Stellenbosch have embarked on an overhaul of their attacking options as they brought Sekgota into their set-up.

Upon Sekgota’s arrival at the club, coach Barker has described him as one of the outstanding attacking players.

“Sekgota is a massive signing for us. He’s a player who we earmarked a while back to try and get into the club, so we are delighted that he has now signed with us,” Barker told the club’s media department.

“He’s an exciting attacking player who has a good pedigree, having represented his country. Who also has the ability to go past players, to create opportunities for his teammates, and to score goals himself.

“We are looking for a massive impact from him and hope to help him get his career back to where it belongs, which is right at the top end of the game.”

NOT AN IDEAL STAY AT KAIZER CHIEFS

The speedy attacker had joined the Glamour boys at the beginning of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season. Sekgota made 50 appearances, scoring only one goal for the Soweto giants in his two-year stay.

Stellenbosch will host the Sea Robbers at the Danie Craven Stadium tonight. The match is scheduled for 20h00. Sekgota is also likely to make a match-day squad in the Stellies’ opener against the Buccaneers. This is despite joining the team just few days before the season begins.
