Polokwane City won their first match of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership after beating Stellenbosch 1-0 at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo on Wednesday. It was a game of two halves as the Visitors dominated proceedings in the first half while Polokwane came out a better side in the second stanza. 

A penalty shout by Stellenbosch players after what looked like a foul on Iqraam Rayners in the sixth minute fell on deaf ears. The referee waved play on. But Stellies still looked a more organised side with good combinations in the middle of the park.

A big chance for the hosts came in the 25th minute after a mix-up between Ismaël Olivier Touré and Keeper Sage Stephens. But the visitors got away with the silly defending. 

Polokwane City nearly scored in the 26th minute but his acrobatic bicycle kick went sideways. Striker Douglas Mapfumo impressed for City in the first half and was a handful to the Stellies defense. Moments later visitors were saved by the post after a shot by Bulelani Nikani in the 18 area box.

But the goal finally came in the 35th for Polokwane City via an own goal by Toure. 

The match went to the halftime break at 1-0 in favour of Polokwane City. Nyakala Raphadu who was playing in a second match for Polokwane came close to scoring. But his shot hit the bar in the 54th minute.

Substitute Anicet Oura nearly scored a stunner for Stellenboisch but his shot from outside the penalty shot hit the post. Rayners came close moments later when his shot from close range was saved by Polokwane keeper Lindokuhle Mathebula. 

Stellenbosch missed a glorious opportunity to equalise when Colley Salifu shot from close range went over the bar five minutes from time, much to the dismay of his Stellies teammates. 

The match ended 1-0 in favour of Polokwane City who secured their first win of the DStv Premiership season.
