The PSL and SAFA have conveyed messages of condolences to the late Bafana Bafana assistant coach Phil “Mr Jones” Setshedi. Setshedi’s death was confirmed by Orlando Pirates on Thursday.

“Affectionately known as “Mr. Clean, Mr. Jones” Setshedi left an indelible mark on the Buccaneers during his time with the club in the late 70s,” the club said.

“During his playing days with Orlando Pirates, Phil Setshedi was a formidable defender. He earned the nickname “Mr. Clean” for the way he carried himself both on and off the field.

“He was always impeccably dressed, and his commitment to cleanliness and personal grooming was a testament to his professionalism. But it wasn’t just his appearance that set him apart. It was his dedication to the beautiful game that truly defined him.”

CONDOLENCES POUR IN FOR PHIL SETSHEDI

Meanwhile, the PSL also announced that there will be a moment of silence for this weekend’s Carling Knockout, DStv Diski Challenge, and Motsepe Foundation Championship fixtures.

“The PSL sends heartfelt condolences to the Setshedi family, and the football community at large.”

SAFA have described Setshedi as a colourful character.

“A colourful character who was often lauded for his flamboyant fashion sense. Setshedi was on the bench serving as assistant to the late Clive Barker when the South African senior men’s team won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996.
Born in Dube, Soweto, his passing comes just months after the legendary Barker passed away in June 2023.”
