Polokwane City midfielder Cole Alexander says they embrace the underdogs’ tag when they face Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-final match on Sunday. Sundowns are huge favourites for the match and many expect them to secure a semi-final place.

But the Limpopo club says being undermined for that match can work in the favour at Lucas Moripe Stadium.

“For us, it’s been hard and a tough pre-season. The guys that have come in have come to the party,” said Alexander on their preparations so far.

“We are gelling during the friendly matches and 11v11. So things are looking good and we are looking forward to the game on Sunday.”

WILL THE UNDERDOG TAG WORK IN POLOKWANE CITY FAVOUR AGAINST MAMELODI SUNDOWNS IN THE MTN8?

“Yeah, I think so [we are underdogs] because that’s what our players need to know as well,” said Alexander.

“We have done well to secure a place in this tournament. But we shouldn’t put unnecessary pressure on ourselves. I am sure the whole country thinks it will be a walk in the park for Sundowns.

“I think we can use that [underdogs] tag as a motivation because we can surprise many when people think we are counted out. We can play from that place where we can give our all because if there is one thing I can say everyone is giving their all,” he said.

“The guys push themselves at training and on the field. So I think that’s one of our strengths where each and every player gives their all on the field.”

The last time Polokwane City qualified for the MTN8 they went to the semi-final stages. But they got eliminated by now-defunct Highlands Park at Makhulong Stadium. Kick-off for the match is at 15:00 at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
