Major League Soccer club Toronto FC have announced the signing of Cassius Mailula from Mamelodi Sundowns. Mailula joins Toronto FC on a three-year deal with a one-year option.

He will be added to the roster as a part of the U-22 Initiative, pending his medicals, work visa and the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We are very excited to welcome Cassius to our club and the city,” said Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez.

“He is a player that will bring a different dimension to our play on the pitch with his versatility, dynamic movement, and finishing ability with both feet.

“He will also provide us with a new young profile off the pitch, with his humility, grit, and ambition to reach the highest levels possible. We look forward to working with Cassius and are happy to have him in the TFC family.”

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STAR JOINS TORONTO FC

Mailula joins Toronto FC after spending his first season with the PSL side where he registered 16 goals and five assists in 32 matches across all competitions.

The Limpopo-born helped the team secure their sixth consecutive Premiership title. Mailula is product of the Mamelodi Sundowns Academy. He signed his first professional contract with the club in August 2022. Mailula made his professional debut in a DStv Premiership match against Chippa United on September 7, 2022.

He made his Bafana Bafana debut in an African Cup of Nations Qualification match. This was when he came on as a substitute against Liberia on 24 March 2023.

DStv Premiership Champions Sundowns issued a statement on Monday confirming the imminent move of the Limpopo-born player. In the 34 matches that Mailula played for the club. He also scored 19 goals in all competitions.

LimSportsZone has been informed that there were two teams from the US keen on signing the 22-year-old. Major League Soccer club Inter Miami was also one of the teams mentioned as interested in the player.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CONFIRM MOVE FOR STAR PLAYER

“Mamelodi Sundowns has been in discussions with a North American football club that expressed interest in acquiring the services of Mailula,” the club said in a statement.

“Sundowns is proud of Cassius Mailula who joined the Sundowns Academy as a 13-year-old and was developed and nurtured by the Mamelodi Sundowns coaches. Mamelodi Sundowns will make further announcements concerning Mailula in due course.”

In an Interview with the Sundowns website a month ago, Mailula reflected on winning his first senior trophy, his remarkable journey so far. 

“It’s a dream come true for me,” he said. 

“It feels amazing to win the league and I am very happy that I even managed to contribute to winning the league.”\

He has a total of nine goals in the DStv Premiership and six goals in the CAF Champions League. It also made him the youngest player in the league to reach this feat

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Cassius Mailula has described his maiden Bafana Bafana call-up as a surprise. Mailula is part of the 23-man squad that will take on Liberia in back-to-back CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The 21-year-old Limpopo born has been in tremendous form for his club this season. 

He has already scored 18 goals in just a space of 16 months since making his senior debut for Masandawana.

WHY MAIDEN BAFANA BAFANA CALL-UP IS A SUPRISE

The man from Ga-Molepo has explained why he felt the call-up came as a surprise to him. 

“For me, it came as a surprise because I didn’t expect to pop up so early,” he told the SAFA media.

“I thought that I would actually be in the U/23 but for me, it was actually good that someone out there could see my hard work. So I was actually happy and excited and ready that hopefully, I can make it to the 23-man squad.”

Cassius Mailula also spoke about how exciting the first day it was for him with the rest of his Bafana Bafana teammates. 

“It was actually good. It was actually just a lite session so for me it was actually good to see people that actually admire and watch,” he said.

“Being in the same pitch with them was amazing and I never thought it would actually come so early but with God’s grace anything happens in its own time.”

Mailula has also revealed who was the first person to welcome him in camp.

“Percy Tau. I always wanted to play on the same team as him. Firstly it was Mshishi (Themba Zwane) but because I am playing with him at Sundowns, I just wanted to one day play with Percy Tau and I’m so happy that it’s finally going to happen.”

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has rubbished talks that the club has received offers for on song forward Cassius Mailula.

Mailula has been a revelation for the defending DStv Premiership club since making his debut at the beginning of the season. He is currently joint top three in the PSL top goal scorers charts.

Mailula is tied on seven goals alongside Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana of Kaizer Chiefs and Etiosa Ighodaro of Chippa United.

SPECULATION OF A MOVE FOR DOWNS STAR 

There has been speculation that the club has received offers from unnamed teams in France’s Ligue 1.

But speaking ahead of their Nedbank Cup last 16 match against Marumo Gallants, Mokwena refuted the claims.

“No, we haven’t received anything from anyone,” Mokwena told journalists. 

The Limpopo born star Mailula has also been tipped to be included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the Afcon qualifiers next month. 

They will face Liberia home and away on 24 March and 28 March respectively.
