The semifinalists of the ongoing Engen Knockout Challenge were officially confirmed on the second day of the tournament currently held at the Siripat Road Sports Ground in Reservoir Hills, Durban on Saturday afternoon.
 
A total of 32 Teams, equally split between Boys (U18) and Girls (U20) have been in action over the last two days to determine who would be crowned the provincial winners and represent KwaZulu-Natal at this year’s Engen Champ of Champs in September.

After a thrilling afternoon of youth football action Midland Academy, KZN Academy, AmaZulu FC and Magic Future Stars were the semi-finalists confirmed in the boys division – while Durban Ladies, Shooting Stars, Sunflower FC as well as Toti Ladies secured their places in the last four of the competition.
 
Wrapping up the second day of tournament, Engen Communications Manager, Gavin Smith said the competition was entering into the more exciting phase which will guarantee fans in attendance a memorable afternoon of youth football.
 
“Today was another great afternoon of youth football in both the boys and girls divisions of the competition. The Engen Knockout Challenge bears testament to the amount of talent that South Africa has and as proud sponsors of this tournament, we are honoured to be a stepping stone to helping this talent achieve its full potential”, said Smith.

The battle lines for the KwaZulu-Natal leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge were officially drawn on Tuesday, 13 June at the Hoy Park Sports Ground in Durban, as the regional phase of the tournament prepares to get underway later this month.

A total of 32 Clubs, equally split between Girls under-20 and Boys under-18, will battle it out at the Tills Crescent Sports Grounds and Hoy Park between 30 June and 2 July.

The highly anticipated tournament will see the winners advancing to the Engen Champ of Champs in Johannesburg later this year where they will meet other provincial winners and selected teams to determine which clubs walk off with national bragging rights for the year.

Speaking at the official draw for the KZN leg, Engen Communications manager, Gavin Smith said they were honoured to once again be playing a key role in creating a platform for talent identification. The draw was attended by SAFA eThekwini President, Mazwi Mkhize, and tournament ambassadors, George Maluleka and Reneilwe Letsholonyane.

For the past 21-years, we have proudly laid a platform for talent development, and we wish to continue doing so, working closely with our stakeholders, the clubs and our communities,” said Smith.

ENGEN KNOCKOUT CHALLANGE DRAW REVEALED

Sharing their thoughts on the draw, both Maluleka and Letsholonyane said the draw produced exciting fixtures and they were looking forward to a stirring 21st edition of the Engen Knockout Challenge.

“As in previous years, the Engen Knockout Challenge will afford players an excellent opportunity to catch the eyes of talent scouts from professional clubs. We are also very excited to see Engen is providing a platform for the women’s game through the ladies’ division of the tournament, which has also drawn up some fascinating clashes”,

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder and current Cape Town DStv Diski Challenge side coach, Mark Mayambela, has been announced Engen Knockout Challenge and Engen Champ of Champs new Ambassador. 

The tournament’s sponsors, Engen have issued a statement confirming the 21st edition of Engen Knockout and Engen Champ of Champs official Ambassadors, that also include former Premier Soccer League (PSL) stars.

The former beloved superstar, Mayambela who coached Cape Town City to the final last year has played in the Engen tournament with great distinction before his professional football career emerged.

MARK MAYAMBELA COMMENTS AFTER BEING NAMED NEWEST AMBASSADOR

Mayambela was delighted to join one of the biggest developers of quality players in the country as an ambassador.

“I am honoured to be selected as one of the ambassadors of a tournament that continues to live up to its high expectations of producing talent,” said the former Bloemfontein Celtic star.

“Engen’s commitment to this tournament must be applauded; not only has it produced professional footballers, but young coaches like myself are exposed to competitive opponents, which also helps us hone and improve our coaching skills.”

Mayambela will also not be the only famous event promoter at the 2023 editions. He joins the likes of former Kaizer Chiefs duo in midfielder George Maluleka and also goalkeeper Brighton Mhlongo.

In addition, the Engen has also seen it important to include women in their set-up this year. The tournament’s also first ever female ambassador will be Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies’ midfielder, Lehlogonolo Mashego.
