Magesi FC have become the latest club from Limpopo to be promoted to the DStv Premiership for the 2024/25 season.

Magesi secured the promotion after a hard fought 3-1 win against Milford FC at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium. Their promotion comes with two matches remaining before the end of the season.

The owner of the club Solly Makhubela has given credit to coach Clinton Larsen for their efforts in securing the top PSL status.

“It’s just about the management and the coach who are working together. I am just a chairman, but I am taking the instructions from them, to be honest,” he said.

“I listen to them and where I need to suggest I do so, but the final decision comes from the management and the coach. Not just me,” explained Makhubela.

Head coach Clinton Larsen has also shown gratitude to the Chairman for the support during the campaign.

“So I want to thank Solly Makhubela and John Mathibe, our CEO for that diligent leadership. It’s quiet but firm, diligent leadership at the top and that’s allowed us to get on with our work.”

“It [promotion] ranks at the top. I won the Telkom Cup with Bloemfontein Celtic,” added Larsen. 

“We have won promotion now, so this is gonna be ‘I am there with that’. So I am very proud of this achievement,” he said.

“Like I said, people don’t know how hard we had to work to get the club to where it is now. People just think, okay, you sign a few players, and you start to win some games.

Meanwhile, another Limpopo club Baroka FC are on the verge of securing a PSL promotion spot. They need to win their two remaining games against JDR Stars and University of Pretoria to seal their place in the playoffs.”

Limpopo club Magesi FC have unveiled 12 new signings while also confirming the departure of 16 players, including Manuel Kambala. Magesi are heading to their second season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

After a 12th-place finish last season, the club has vowed to fight for promotion for the upcoming season. The club held an official unveiling event at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns manager Peter Koutroulis who has been appointed as a technical advisor. He joins together with four new technical staff members.

Motsoshi Baloyi, Tebogo Semenya, Thokozani Hlubi, Tlou Masegela, Njabulo Buthelezi, Mthokozisi Msomi, Junior Letwaba, Raymond Maluleke, Solly Makgoga, Shane April, Gopolang Seema, Donald Mokondelela, Lethabo Mazibuko, Thabiso Botopela, Manuel Kambala and Kagiso Selemela.

“It was a collective decision by the technical team and management to release the players we did,” said coach Clinton Larsen. “I think of all the players, Selemela was the one player that we tried to keep,” he said

The owner of Magesi FC Solomon Masilo Makhubela has been conferred with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Community Development at the Tzaneen TVet College of Higher Learning. The ceremony took place on 29 July 2023. 

The club also confirmed in a statement that their chairman is now referred to as Dr Makhubela.

“Magesi Football Club extends words of appreciation to its President, Solomon Masilo Makhubela for being inducted as a Doctor of Philosophy in Community Development at the Tzaneen TVet College of Higher Learning on 29 July 2023. Dr Makhubela has for years, dedicated his resources towards developing communities within Limpopo,” the club said. 

“Among his many acts of service, Dr Makhubela supports educational programs in schools. The elderly and in collaboration with Mantona Kgoshi Kgabo Moloto wa Boraro, has uplifted the Moletjie region. This is where he hails from.

“The newly capped doctor is also a God-fearing man, who has contributed immensely to various religious organisations,” the club said.


“Having risen through the ranks and served in different leadership and managerial positions, he continuously sustained his activism in both governance and organisations.

“Dikwena extends these words of congratulations to Dr Makhubela and his family,” said the club. 

Magesi are into the second season in the Motsepe Foundation Championship since their return from the SAFA ABC Motsepe League. 

The Limpopo club finished 12th last season under the guidance of coach Clinton Larsen. They will open their 2023/24 campaign with a Limpopo derby against rivals Baroka FC at the Global Stadium.
